Image
You can make homemade sushi with just about anything! A great dairy and gluten free meal. Follow Foods For Long Life on Facebook and Pinterest . What a month! It's been a crazy busy month here on our farm. First we harvested 5 tons of Pinot Noir, then a little Sauvignon blanc for my private stash. We've also been harvesting lots of veggies, putting in a Zen garden, getting ready to paint the outside of our house, and enjoying visits from our son and daughter-in-law (Vaughn and Karina), as well as our daughter and her fiancé (Linda and Jim), and our nephew Cody. Later today, we look forward to a visit from my cousin Lisa and her husband Rob. On top of it all, I broke my toe last Thursday so I guess I'm going to slow down a bit whether I want to or not! Part of our Pinot Noir harvest Poblano Peppers With the end of summer come lots of peppers. One of our most delicious and prolific is the poblano pepper so today we're going to mix two of our favorite cuisines - Mexican a...

Image
Beat the heat with this cucumber salad. Follow Foods For Long Life on Facebook and Pinterest . We've had record breaking heat this last week. Sebastopol topped its record with 111 degrees. So needless to say, we've been eating a lot of raw foods and foods that are cooling. Cucumbers are very hydrating and I just happen to have a cucumber plant that is presenting me with 2 enormous and perfect cucumbers a day!  Here's a quick salad that we made for lunch yesterday. It also uses our garden cherry tomatoes. With protein-packed garbanzo beans and good fats from the avocado, this is a perfectly balanced vegan and gluten-free meal for two hungry people or a side dish for 4 to 6.              *                         *                          * Cucumber Salad with Garbanzos and Cherry Tomatoes Vegan, Dairy and Glu...

Flourless Plantain TortillasLow Calorie And Gluten Free

Green Plantains make delicious grain-free tortillas. And, they are less than 40 calories! Follow Foods For Long Life on Facebook and Pinterest . Gluten and Grain-Free Tortillas Most people buy corn tortillas when they are trying to avoid gluten or products made from various gluten-free grains such as brown rice, amaranth, quinoa, millet, teff, and sorghum. But if you want to avoid grains completely, here's a brilliant alternative that my friend Margarite introduced me to - making tortillas from green plantains! Make sure to buy green plantains, not ripe ones. Plantains may look like bananas but they are starchy, not sweet. They are not eaten as a fruit and must be cooked. The biggest difference is that they are not as easy to peel! But I'll be showing you a trick to make that easier.  Although most plantain tortilla recipes just use plantains, I've jazzed these up with seasonings, and herbs. And of course I added some freshly harvested garlic. For my herbs, I used t...

Strawberry Crisp With Nutty Hemp Seed Topping

Fresh strawberries in a delicious vegan and gluten-free crisp. Follow Foods For Long Life on Facebook and Pinterest . Strawberries are in Season My little strawberry patch is producing in full force and although my favorite way of enjoying them is to just pop them in my mouth, I love making this healthy strawberry crisp.  Strawberries from my garden. To add additional fiber and structure, I combine the strawberries with a few delicious pears and to get a good dose of omega-3, I add raw, shelled hemp seeds.  I like the taste of organic coconut sugar in this recipe but you can also use regular organic cane sugar.                        *                                 *                                  * Strawberry Crisp Vegan, Gluten Free (...
